Frequently Asked Questions
How long will the first exam take and what should I expect?

Typically the first exam takes about 45 minutes to an hour.  An exam includes a series of
tests performed to assess acuity, refraction and potential eye disease.  We will also take a
photo of the back of your eye for the doctors to examine.  This gives the doctor a chance
to make sure you are not starting with any early signs of cataracts, glaucoma, or macular
degeneration.  They are also looking for any scars, freckles or moles on the eye.
Will my eyes be dilated?

Your eyes will normally be dilated for a routine eye exam as this helps the doctor see the
back of your eye.  This is the important part of the eye where light focuses.  The drops we
use will usually keep your eyes dilated for 3 to 6 hours. Reading small print and focusing on
things close to you may be difficult for this time afterward.  If you have sunglasses, please
bring them along as you will be sensitive to sunlight while being dilated. We will give you a
temporary pair of sunglasses if needed.
Do you check for glaucoma?

Yes, the doctors do check for glaucoma during every comprehensive exam.   We do not do
the puff of air test otherwise known as NCT.  The doctors use other methods for checking
the pressure of the eyes and risk factors for glaucoma.

What is the recommended frequency for eye examination for pediatric and adult
patients?

An evaluation of your child's eyes should occur as early as infancy, this can be done
through an InfantSEE exam.  If no significant problems are found at this time, your child
can then be seen again at age three and age five.  Following this, it is recommended that
children have an exam every year.

Depending upon the patient's situation, family medical and ocular history, adults should
receive an eye exam every year with a dilation.
